Florida Access Network shares an update on funding challenges and necessary organizational restructuring.

The difficult reality is that, for FAN to continue to fund access to abortions and provide community education for Floridians, we must restructure our budget through layoffs and program shifts.

For the past thirty years, Florida Access Network (FAN) has built pathways for abortion access by advocating for reproductive justice, funding abortion care, and providing logistical support to make abortion access a reality. We remain steadfast and are committed to our mission through the highs and lows of running an abortion fund in these times.

Due to increasing budget struggles, FAN has made the very hard decision to move through internal restructuring.

The difficult reality is that, in order for FAN to continue to fund access to abortions and provide meaningful community education for Floridians, we must restructure our budget through layoffs and program shifts.

Each team member at FAN is a dedicated and compassionate person who has contributed tremendously to the fight for abortion access, even in the face of a near-total abortion ban.

At this time, we have made the incredibly hard choice to lay off members of our Operations and Community Engagement teams. We are also re-evaluating some of our Community Engagement priorities.

FAN is just one of many organizations across the Reproductive Justice movement and the South that are facing financial hardship. Since more bans have been enacted and more DEI cuts have been made, funders have steered away from supporting our work the way they once did. It has been over two years since the near-total ban was enacted, ‘rage donations’ from the community that expanded our services have disappeared as the cost of living climbs and the need for donations across issues split their dollars.

We’ve seen funders turn their backs on abortion funds and repro workers as they capitulate to conservative fear-mongering around abortion, Reproductive Justice, and Black liberation.

It’s difficult to be another fund announcing layoffs and budget cuts, but we know that FAN and our sibling funds are committed to our mission of abortion access for all, and we’ll help each other get through this time of scarcity.

FAN is a 30 year old Southern abortion fund, and we are no stranger to hostile shifts in the political landscape. We have 30 years of experience operating in a state and region that is the testing ground for the most repressive policies against our most vulnerable community members. We know we’re in a struggle for our mission, but we know we’re not in it alone.
